Leopard seal on Gisborne beach

A leopard seal, which normally lives in Antarctica, has swum all the way to Gisborne and has decided to stay there a while for a rest. Leopard seals are a protected species and have made trips north fairly frequently in recent times, including times spent around Auckland and at Mahia Peninsula.

If you go see it or happen to come across one, make sure you keep a distance (20m is recommended) as they can move fast and have a nasty bite.
