Tapeka Ratepayers Group

Date started: Dune restoration was started in 2008

Purpose of group: Tapeka Ratepayers Group have been involved in dune restoration work at the beach to counter erosion of the reserve.

About the group: In 2008 heavy rain caused the stream at Tapeka to erode the reserve. Concerned locals were keen for something to be done to stop the erosion of the reserve and permission was gained to dig the stream mouth out so that it flowed directly out to sea. The steep bank along the reserve was then shaped to form a gentle slope which was planted out with spinifex. Sand-ladders were put in to provide access down to the beach and the planted area was fenced off and signposted. The spinifex has thrived at Tapeka and has trapped a lot of sand on the newly formed dune.
