Friends of Ōwhiro Stream

Date started: 2003

Purpose of the Group: The aim, as articulated in 2008:

Our vision is that the Ōwhiro Stream flows free and clear as a living link between land and sea, sustaining native animals and plants for people to enjoy and care for.

Our goals:

  • To work with community to protect and restore the stream and environment
  • Enhance habitat for native animals and plants on land and in the water
  • Improve quality of water in the stream
  • Encourage peoples’ enjoyment and care of the stream
  • Work with people and organisations that have an impact on the stream and the catchment
  • Look for new ways in which the urban and natural environments can co-exist
  • Monitor progress towards self sustaining eco-systems in the stream environment

Location of main site: Margins of Ōwhiro stream from where the stream emerges from a pipe at Jamieson’s Towing, to Murchison St.
