Botanist and 2021 recipient of our Pīngao & Toheroa Award, Colin Ogle, will present an overview of the coastal vegetation of the coastal plains of the Manawatū-/South Taranaki region: what it was like historically; its unique features; its current state, which in conservation terms is pretty dire, much of the original vegetation having been reduced through extensive land clearance to a patchwork of, usually, small fragments under constant threat from invasion by aggressive non-native weeks and from human-induced disturbances; and what is being done—and still needs to be done—to secure a future for these remnants of a unique flora.
